Morning Message

Let's start with some movement! I wish you well

Activity 1 

Literacy- 20 minutes 

Sorting - Letter J 

Materials needed: paper, glue, box, pencil.

Vocabulary: juice- jar- jeep- jellyfish- jug-sort.

Beginning: 

Parents, please print the template, cut the pictures and place them in a box or bowl. 

Ask the child “I wonder what the activity will be?”

Middle:

· Acknowledge different answers/ guesses.

· Ask the child to open the box and check the pictures.

· Let the child name the pictures.

· Stress on the beginning sound of each picture.

· Divide a paper into halves, one side for the pictures that have the /j/ and the other for not /j/.

· Paste pictures according to /j/ or not.

Extension: You can encourage the child to write the words of the pictures.

End: 

Give 5 minutes notice before the end of the activity.

Ask the child if they would like to send a picture of the work to the teacher.

Activity 2 

Math (10 minutes)

Number recognition 

Materials needed: Balloons (foil balls if not available) , markers, paper.

Vocabulary: number, bigger, smaller, order (one, two, three…).

Beginning: 

Write a number on each balloon (1 -10) and hide them in the house.

Middle:

· Tell your child, “We are going on balloon hunt.”

· Let the child look and collect all the balloons.

· Ask your child to read the number on each balloon.

· Ask your child the throw and catch the balloon according to the number on the balloon.

· Ask which number is bigger/ smaller? Is 5 bigger or smaller than 9?....

Extension: Ask the child to write from 1- 10 on a paper.

End: 

Give 5 minutes notice and you can ask the child to put balloon number 1 first and number 5 second and so on.

Activity 3 

Fine motor skills (5 minutes)

Materials needed: cardboard- colored markers- colored straws or coloring pencils.

Parents or caregivers make holes on the cardboard and then the child has to insert sticks/ straws according to the color. 

By pushing the stick, s/he is working on intrinsic muscles of his/her hands and on attention to follow the color pattern.

Seeds- watermelon if possible, but not mandatory

Wednesday 8th April

Good Morning KG1A!

Morning Message:

Activity one:

Math (20 minutes)

Number walk

Ask your child to take a walk around the house for familiar things (picture frames, chairs, cushions, slippers ..etc.) and keep a tally mark of each item they find.

Materials: paper and pencil to tally mark. 

Vocabulary: tally mark, count, how many, more, less, number words, total, equal, same, add. 

Beginning:

Tell your child they will be taking a walk around the house. Talk about what they may see on their walk. Make comments such “I wonder if we see any pens?” Or “I wonder how many picture frames we will see?” Tell them that it will be fun to record and keep track of what they see. Write down on a piece of paper three or more things your child suggested give them the paper and pencil on a clipboard if available to carry on the walk. 

Middle:

As your child walks around the house, remind them to tally mark what they see. Acknowledge other things your child may discover.
Ask if they want to add these discoveries to their list.

When your child says they found something, you may help your child use more vocabulary to describe and compare what they found.
For example, “This picture frame is bigger then the one we found before.”


Extension: When you finish with the walk, have your child count each item and compare them. Your child may also write down the numbers they count. 

End:

Before you finish the walk by 5 minutes. Give your child a warning and tell them we will go back to the table to count our tally marks. 

Activity two:

Literacy (10 minutes)

Lowercase snow globe search.

Your child will recognize lowercase letters and focus on beginning sounds.

Materials needed: You may make a globe with your child and write all the lowercase letters on the globe.
Cotton or stickers (to cover the letter if they wish to do so), pencil, box or bag to place the items in.
Items from around the house such as, pencil, eraser, marker, crayons, orange, apple, airplane, cup, dinosaur, fan, feather .. etc.
You will need one item per letter.
Be creative :)  If you can’t find an item then draw something on a paper and place it in the box/bag.

Vocabulary: letter sounds, beginning, middle, end sounds.

Beginning: 

Tell your child for this activity they would put their hands in the box/bag to choose an item. Ask them what they found, what letter they hear and what beginning sound it has.  

Middle: 

Listen to your child as they say the words. Repeat the word after your child and focus on the beginning sound. Say c c cat.
What letter do you hear at the beginning of the word cat?

Pause and listen to their response.State what sound your child is hearing the most. For example if your child says “Truck” and they say ‘K’ You may say, Way to go!
K is the end letter of the word Truck!

Note down what letters your child is quick at recognizing and what letters they need more practice in. 

Tell your child every time they know a beginning sound they may want to cover that with cotton or a sticker to decorate your globe. 

Extension: Your child may write down the lowercase letters themselves. They may also try spelling out the letter sounds they hear.

End:

Give your child 5 minutes warning before ending this activity. Remember to clean up together and tell your child where you will place the globe for further use. 

Activity three

Fine motor skills (5 minutes)

Spider web. 

Grab a small  basket, weave some yarn through to make a web and add some spiders or any other small animals/items you have.

Give your child tweezers or clothespins and tell them to get the spiders/items out of the web. 

The more yarn you wear around the basket, the more challenging the activity will be.

Activity 1

Science (20 minutes)

Straw Stems

Materials: Straws, celery stick or leaves with easily visible veins (e.g. petunia flower petals), kitchen towels, food color, water, a glass and 2 transparent containers. 

Beginning: 

Last week we looked at the different parts of a plant.  Today, we will see how the stem of a plant acts like a straw, pulling up water from the bottom to the flower! 

Middle:

This experiment is in three parts. 

Ask your child to fill the transparent container with water and a few drops of food coloring.  Ask them to place the celery stick (or leaves) into the container, making sure a part of it is outside the container also. 

Ask your child to do the same with the kitchen towel in the second container. 

Ask your child to drink water from a straw.  Ask them to observe what happens. Discuss what happens to the water. Suggest that water moves up the straw from the glass into their mouth.  

Come back to the transparent containers after 10 minutes.  You may:

• Ask them to observe what has happened to the celery stick/leaves/kitchen roll.  Have they changed in appearance/color?
• Acknowledge their thinking and build on it.
• Connect the straw drinking to the stem experiment by stating “Just as you suck up the water with a straw, the celery stick/leaf/kitchen roll also drinks the water and gets colored all the way to the top.  

Extension: You may ask your child to grow their own plant.  Give them a transparent cup or container. Line the bottom with cotton wool and soak it with water.  Place a few lentil or bean seeds in it. Your child should check on the plant once a day to ensure it has water and wait for the stem and roots to sprout! 

End: 

Let your child know that this experiment may take longer and they may need to check on it the next day.  For now, give them a 5 minute notice and ask them to clear up their work area.

Activity 2 

Literacy (10 minutes)

Letter J

Materials: Shaving cream and a plastic tray

Beginning:  

Let’s think of the words ‘Jam’, ‘Jacket’, ‘Jar’, ‘Juice’, ‘Jeans’ and our friend ‘Jolina’!  What do these words have in common?
Give time to your child to form the connection between the words (the letter J).

Middle:

Today, we will be learning how to write the letter ‘J’.

Squeeze out a dollop of shaving cream onto the tray.  Ask your child to spread it. 

Use these words to describe the letter as you make the letter on the tray. 
You say, “Start with a straight, big line. When you reach the bottom, curve the line to the left.  Finally, add a small little line across the first line.”
You may demonstrate to your child as you say these words.

Extension: Ask your child to sound out and write words starting with the letter J such as ‘Jam’, ‘Jog’, ‘Jet’. 

End: 

Give your child a 5 minute notice on the activity finishing.  Remind them to clean the tray and return it to its usual place.  

Activity 3

Fine motor skills (5 minutes)

Place a collection of seeds/lentils (anything smaller than a chickpea) into a bowl. 
One of these items should be less in number so they are not so easily spotted in the bowl (let’s call it material A). 
Ask your child to ‘fish out’ only material A using their thumb and two fingers (tripod grasp).
Ask them to use the seed to make different letters.

Monday, 6th April

Good Morning KG1A!

I Love you ritual: Humpty Dumpty

Activity one

Math (20 minutes) 

Making numbers 7 and 8 

Children will learn to count, recognise and represent numbers seven and eight using play dough. 

Materials needed: Chart as in the picture, play dough, and markers or pencil. 

Beginning: 

Tell your child that today you will be using play dough to make numbers 7 and 8. Ask them if they know what 7 and 8 look like. Listen to their answers. 

Middle:

As your child is making the numbers with play dough use the words like straight lines, curves and round. 

Tell your child to show you numbers 7/8 in a different way. You may start making 7 small circles with play dough  and count as you are making it. Ask your child how many more you need to get 8 circles. Encourage them to count as they are working with the dough. 

Introduce the empty graph above to them and encourage them to present those numbers using the graph. Encourage your child to make other numbers they already know as well and imitate their work. 

Extension: You may offer your child a marker or pencil to write down the numbers.

End:

Give your child 5 minutes notice of the end of the activity. Encourage your child to clean up with you and count as they are cleaning up. 

Activity two

Literacy (10 minutes) 

Commands and directions.

During this activity your child will learn to focus on giving and receiving more than one command/ direction at a time. 

Materials: You and your child. 

Vocabulary: directions, straight, left, right, down, up, over, under, switch, turn, back, before, after.

Beginning:

Tell your child that for this activity you will need to use your listening ears to get it right. You can start by telling them 2 directions. For example: close the door and jump. 

Middle:

Allow your child to give you 2 or 3 directions. For example: Close the light, come back and give me high five. 

The easier you feel it is for your child you may add more and more directions at one time. For example: Wash your hands, jump twice, clap twice, and sit on the couch. You may also add breathing or yoga into your directions. 

Extension: Offer your child a paper and pencil and tell them to draw or write commands/directions. Encourage them to write down beginning, middle, and ending sounds of their words. 

End:

Give your child a 5 minute notice before asking them to finish the activity. 

Activity Three

Fine motor skills: (5 minutes)

Work with your child on tying their shoes and/or zipping up their jackets. Tell your child as they go to KG2 they should be able to tie their shoes and zip their jackets.

I love you ritual 

Activity 1

Literacy (20 minutes)

Journal writing- Spring is in the air! 

Materials needed: writing and coloring materials and a print out of the journal paper (here)

Beginning:

It’s a beautiful day outside!  Pop outside or open the window to see what is happening outside. 

Middle:

Provide writing and coloring materials. Ask them to draw out what they imagine Spring to be like. 

You may say:

·      I wonder what types of birds are out. 

·      I wonder what type of flowers you can see (you can reference last week’s Science activity).

·      Acknowledge their drawings.  Ask them questions about it. 

·      Encourage them to label some parts of the drawings themselves.  

Extension:  Ask them to write a sentence on what they have drawn.  Remind them to leave a ‘finger space’ between the words in their sentence. 
 A simple sentence such as “I go outside” is sufficient at this stage.

End:

Let the children know they have 5 minutes to complete their work.  Find a place in the house where they can hang the picture.
Ask them if they would like to send it to the teacher so she can put it up on the blog.

Note: Please keep this page safe, I will be asking the children to share them next week.

Activity 2

Math (10 minutes)

Foil basketball  

Materials needed: 20 balls made from foil (If foil is not available, you may used recycled paper).  A basket or container. Paper and pencil to record results

Beginning:

Today, we will be playing a game of basketball!  First, on your paper, draw a line in the middle. Put a check on one side and a cross (x) in the other column.  

You have 20 balls (spheres).  You need to stand at a baseline (start from the same line each time).  

Middle:

-Try to throw the ball into the basket one at a time.  

-After each attempt, your child will record their results on their paper.  They will make a tally mark under the check if they scored a basket.
They will make a tally mark under the x if they did not make a basket.  
-Continue the game until all the balls have finished

-Once completed, your child will count the tally marks and let the adult know if they got more balls in or outside the basket. 

Extension: Ask your child to write down the number of balls in each column.  Ask them to repeat the activity from a further distance and then compare their results.  You may ask them which distance allowed them to get more baskets? How many more?  

End:

Give your child a 5 minute notice to finish the activity.  You may ask them to keep the balls aside so they can play it with a sibling/person at a later time.  

Materials Needed

Activity 3 

Fine motor skills (5 minutes)

Materials: Long roll of paper (or stick the edges of 5 A4 papers together to form a long paper). Tape, marker and a pair of scissors 

Stick one side of the paper onto a wall or easel.  The remainder of the paper remains loose.

Using a thick stroke, draw a squiggle line from the top to the bottom of the paper with the marker. 

Ask your child to start at the bottom of the paper and cut along the line to the top of the paper.  You may draw multiple lines for them to cut.
